Using white distilled vinegar in laundry is a simple, inexpensive way to help brighten clothes and soften towels—without commercial fabric softener.
Why It Works
White vinegar (acetic acid) helps:
- Break down detergent residue that dulls fabrics
- Dissolve mineral buildup from hard water
- Reduce musty odors
- Naturally soften fibers (especially towels)
🧺 For Brighter Clothes
Method 1: Add During Rinse Cycle
- Add ½ cup (120 ml) white vinegar to the fabric softener compartment.
- It will release during the rinse cycle.
- Safe for both whites and colors.
Method 2: For Dingy Whites
- Add 1 cup vinegar directly to the drum with hot water.
- Let clothes soak for about 30–60 minutes before washing as usual.
🛁 For Softer Towels
- Add ½–1 cup white vinegar to the rinse cycle.
- Do not use fabric softener (it coats fibers and reduces absorbency).
- Dry towels fully—preferably in the sun for extra freshness.
Tip: If towels feel stiff, wash once with 1 cup vinegar (no detergent), then wash again with ½ cup baking soda (no detergent) to strip buildup.
Important Notes
- Use white distilled vinegar only (not apple cider or cleaning vinegar).
- Do not mix vinegar and bleach in the same load.
- The vinegar smell disappears once clothes are dry.
- Safe for HE machines when used in moderation.
If you’d like, tell me what type of fabrics you’re washing (athletic wear, baby clothes, darks, etc.), and I can tailor the method.
