Texas Toast Sloppy Joes

Posted on January 5, 2026 by Admin

Here’s a fun, hearty twist on a classic—Texas Toast Sloppy Joes 🍞🍔
Soft, buttery bread loaded with flavorful sloppy joe filling.

Texas Toast Sloppy Joes

Ingredients (Serves 4–6)

For the filling:

  • 1 lb (450 g) ground beef
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 green bell pepper, chopped (optional)
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp mustard (yellow or Dijon)
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • Salt & pepper, to taste

For serving:

  • 8 slices Texas toast
  • Optional: shredded cheese (cheddar or American)

Instructions

  1. Cook the filling
    • In a skillet over medium heat, brown ground beef with onion (and bell pepper if using).
    • Drain excess fat.
  2. Add sauce ingredients
    • Stir in ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
    • Simmer 5–7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until thickened.
  3. Prepare Texas toast
    • Toast slices lightly in the oven or on a skillet, optionally brushing with butter for extra flavor.
  4. Assemble Sloppy Joes
    • Spoon hot beef mixture onto Texas toast slices.
    • Top with cheese if desired, and another slice of toast if you like a “double” style.
  5. Serve
    • Serve immediately with pickles, chips, or a side salad.

Tips

  • For extra gooeyness, place assembled sandwiches under the broiler for 1–2 minutes to melt the cheese.
  • Add a splash of BBQ sauce for smoky flavor.
  • Leftover filling freezes well for future sandwiches.

If you want, I can also give a casserole version where the sloppy joe filling and Texas toast bake together—super easy for weeknights.

Do you want me to share that?
