Baked beans

Here’s a classic take on Baked Beans — sweet, savory, and perfect as a side for barbecue, meatloaf, or a hearty breakfast:

Classic Baked Beans

Makes 4–6 servings

Ingredients

  • 4 cups cooked navy beans or canned beans, drained and rinsed
  • 4 slices bacon, chopped (optional for smoky flavor)
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • ½ cup brown sugar (adjust to taste)
  • ¼ cup molasses
  • 1/3 cup ketchup
  • 1 tbsp yellow mustard
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ tsp smoked paprika (optional)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • ½ cup water or broth

Instructions

1️⃣ Preheat oven

  • Preheat to 350°F (175°C).

2️⃣ Cook bacon and aromatics

  • In a skillet over medium heat, cook bacon until crispy.
  • Remove bacon and sauté onion and garlic in the bacon fat until softened, 3–4 minutes.

3️⃣ Combine ingredients

  • In a baking dish, combine beans, bacon, onion, garlic, brown sugar, molasses, ketchup, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, smoked paprika, salt, pepper, and water/broth.
  • Stir until well combined.

4️⃣ Bake

  • Cover with foil and bake 45–60 minutes, stirring halfway through.
  • Remove foil for the last 10–15 minutes to thicken the sauce and caramelize slightly.

5️⃣ Serve

  • Serve warm as a side with barbecue, grilled meats, or your favorite comfort meal.

Tips

  • For vegetarian baked beans, skip the bacon and use olive oil or smoked paprika for depth.
  • Adjust sweetness with more or less brown sugar/molasses.
  • Can make in a slow cooker on low for 4–6 hours for a “set-it-and-forget-it” option.

If you want, I can give a Southern-style baked beans recipe with onions, bell peppers, bacon, and a touch of hot sauce — the kind you’d get at a classic cookout.

Do you want me to do that?
