Here’s a simple, reliable cheese scone recipe that works every time.


Cheese Scones Recipe

Ingredients (makes 8–10 scones)

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp black pepper (optional)
  • ¼ cup cold butter, cubed
  • 1 cup grated cheese (cheddar works best)
  • ¾ cup milk

Optional add-ins: mustard powder, chives, paprika


Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C). Line a baking tray with parchment paper.
  2. Mix dry ingredients
    • In a bowl, combine flour, baking powder, salt, and pepper.
  3. Rub in butter
    • Rub cold butter into the flour using your fingers until it looks like breadcrumbs.
  4. Add cheese
    • Stir in most of the grated cheese (save a little for the tops).
  5. Add milk
    • Pour in milk and gently mix to form a soft dough.
    • Don’t overmix—this keeps scones light.
  6. Shape & cut
    • Turn dough onto a lightly floured surface.
    • Pat to about 1 inch thick.
    • Cut into rounds or triangles.
  7. Top & bake
    • Place on tray, sprinkle remaining cheese on top.
    • Bake 12–15 minutes until risen and golden.
  8. Cool slightly & serve
    • Best enjoyed warm with butter.

  • Handle dough as little as possible
  • Sharp cheddar gives the best flavor
  • Eat fresh—they’re best the same day
