Posted on December 31, 2025 by Admin

Here’s a classic, comforting recipe for Hamburger Steaks with Onion Gravy — juicy beef patties smothered in rich, savory onion sauce 🥩🧅🍲

Hamburger Steaks with Onion Gravy

Ingredients

For the Hamburger Steaks

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 egg
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons oil or butter for frying

For the Onion Gravy

  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt & pepper, to taste

Instructions

1. Make the Hamburger Steaks

  1. In a bowl, combine ground beef, chopped onion, egg, breadcrumbs, salt, pepper, and Worcestershire sauce.
  2. Shape into 4 oval patties.
  3. Heat oil or butter in a skillet over medium heat.
  4. Brown patties 3–4 minutes per side until cooked through. Remove and set aside.

2. Make the Onion Gravy

  1. In the same skillet, melt butter and sauté sliced onions until soft and caramelized, about 5–7 minutes.
  2. Stir in flour and cook 1–2 minutes to remove raw taste.
  3. Gradually whisk in beef broth and Worcestershire sauce.
  4. Simmer 5–7 minutes until thickened. Season with salt and pepper.

3. Combine and Serve

  1. Return hamburger steaks to the gravy and simmer 2–3 minutes to heat through.
  2. Serve hot with mashed potatoes, rice, or noodles.

Tips

  • For extra flavor, brown the patties well — the fond adds richness to the gravy.
  • You can add mushrooms to the gravy for a variation.
  • Leftovers taste great reheated and served over rice or mashed potatoes.

I can also give you a slow cooker version that’s hands-off and very tender.
