Homemade Spaghetti

Ingredients

For the Sauce:

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 3–4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 lb (450 g) ground beef, pork, or a mix (optional)
  • 1 can (28 oz) crushed tomatoes
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • ½ teaspoon sugar (optional, to balance acidity)
  • Salt & pepper, to taste
  • Optional: red pepper flakes for heat

For the Spaghetti:

  • 12 oz (340 g) spaghetti noodles
  • Water and salt for boiling

Optional Garnishes:

  • Grated Parmesan cheese
  • Fresh basil leaves
  • Red pepper flakes

Instructions

1. Cook the Sauce

  1. Heat olive oil in a large skillet or saucepan over medium heat.
  2. Sauté onion until soft, about 3–4 minutes. Add garlic and cook 1 minute more.
  3. Add ground meat (if using) and cook until browned. Drain excess fat.
  4. Stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, oregano, basil, sugar, salt, pepper, and optional red pepper flakes.
  5. Simmer on low heat 20–30 minutes, stirring occasionally, until thickened.

2. Cook the Spaghetti

  1. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add spaghetti and cook according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and toss with a little olive oil to prevent sticking.

3. Serve

  1. Plate spaghetti and top with the sauce.
  2. Garnish with Parmesan cheese and fresh basil if desired.

Tips

  • Richer flavor: Simmer sauce longer (up to 1 hour) for deeper flavor.
  • Vegetable boost: Add diced carrots, bell peppers, or mushrooms to the sauce.
  • Make it ahead: Sauce can be made a day ahead — flavors deepen overnight.
