Patty melt

Posted on December 31, 2025 by Admin

Here’s a classic Patty Melt recipe β€” a juicy burger patty with melted cheese and caramelized onions on grilled bread πŸ₯©πŸ§…πŸ§€

Patty Melt

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20 for juicier patties)
  • Salt & pepper, to taste
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 4 slices Swiss cheese (or your favorite melting cheese)
  • 8 slices rye bread (or sourdough)
  • 2–3 tablespoons butter
  • Optional: Thousand Island or Russian dressing

Instructions

1. Caramelize the Onions

  1. Heat 1 tablespoon butter in a skillet over medium heat.
  2. Add onions and cook slowly, stirring occasionally, 10–15 minutes until golden brown and soft. Remove and set aside.

2. Cook the Beef Patties

  1. Divide ground beef into 4 equal portions and form thin patties slightly smaller than the bread slices.
  2. Season with salt and pepper.
  3. In the same skillet, cook patties 3–4 minutes per side until cooked through.

3. Assemble the Patty Melts

  1. Butter one side of each bread slice.
  2. On the unbuttered side, layer: cheese, cooked patty, caramelized onions, and more cheese if desired. Top with a second slice of bread (buttered side out).

4. Grill the Sandwich

  1. Heat a skillet over medium heat. Grill sandwiches 3–4 minutes per side until bread is golden and cheese is melted. Press lightly with a spatula for a crispy exterior.

5. Serve

  1. Slice in half and serve hot, optionally with pickles or a side of fries.

Tips

  • Use thin patties so they cook quickly and evenly with the bread.
  • Add Thousand Island dressing inside for a classic diner-style flavor.
  • For extra crispiness, press the sandwich with a spatula while grilling.

If you want, I can also give a quick skillet version where everything cooks in one pan for less cleanup.
