Here’s a hearty, messy, and delicious Texas Toast Sloppy Joe recipe 🍞🍔—perfect for a quick family meal.

Texas Toast Sloppy Joes

Ingredients (Serves 4–6)

For the filling:

  • 1 lb (450 g) ground beef
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 green bell pepper, chopped (optional)
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp mustard (yellow or Dijon)
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • Salt & pepper, to taste

For serving:

  • 8 slices Texas toast
  • Optional: shredded cheddar cheese

Instructions

  1. Cook the filling
    • In a skillet over medium heat, brown ground beef with onion (and bell pepper if using).
    • Drain excess fat.
  2. Add sauce ingredients
    • Stir in ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
    • Simmer 5–7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until thickened.
  3. Prepare Texas toast
    • Toast slices lightly in the oven or on a skillet.
    • Optionally, brush with butter for extra flavor.
  4. Assemble Sloppy Joes
    • Spoon hot beef mixture onto Texas toast slices.
    • Top with cheese if desired, and cover with another slice of toast if you like a “double” sandwich.
  5. Serve
    • Serve immediately with chips, fries, or a side salad.

Tips

  • For extra gooeyness, place assembled sandwiches under the broiler 1–2 minutes to melt the cheese.
  • Add a splash of BBQ sauce or hot sauce for extra flavor.
  • Leftover filling can be refrigerated and reheated for later sandwiches.

If you want, I can also give a Texas Toast Sloppy Joe Casserole version where the beef mixture and toast bake together—super easy for weeknights.

Do you want me to share that version?
