Brittle, splitting, and breaking fingernails are very common and usually not serious — but they can be frustrating. Here’s what’s typically going on and what you can do.
Common Causes
1. Frequent water exposure
Repeated wetting and drying (dishwashing, handwashing, cleaning) weakens nails and causes splitting.
2. Dryness
Cold weather, low humidity, and frequent sanitizer use dry out nails.
3. Chemical exposure
Nail polish remover (especially acetone), gel manicures, cleaning products.
4. Nutritional deficiencies
Less common, but can include:
- Iron deficiency
- Low protein intake
- Biotin deficiency (rare)
5. Aging
Nails naturally become more brittle over time.
6. Medical conditions (less common)
- Hypothyroidism
- Psoriasis
- Anemia
What You Can Do
✅ Moisturize daily
- Use hand cream after washing hands.
- Apply cuticle oil or petroleum jelly at night.
- Look for products with urea, glycerin, shea butter, or hyaluronic acid.
✅ Protect from water & chemicals
- Wear gloves for dishes and cleaning.
- Avoid prolonged soaking.
✅ Trim properly
- Keep nails short.
- File gently in one direction (don’t saw back and forth).
✅ Limit harsh nail treatments
- Reduce acetone use.
- Avoid frequent gel/acrylic manicures.
✅ Consider biotin (if persistent)
- 2.5 mg (2500 mcg) daily has some evidence for improving nail thickness.
- Takes 2–3 months to see changes.
- Check with your doctor first if you take other medications.
When to See a Doctor
Get evaluated if you notice:
- Spoon-shaped nails
- Dark streaks
- Pitting
- Nail separation from the nail bed
- Fatigue, hair loss, or cold intolerance (possible thyroid issue)
- Pale skin (possible anemia)
If you’d like, tell me:
- Your age range
- Any other symptoms (fatigue, hair thinning, cold sensitivity?)
- Whether this started recently or has been long-term
That helps narrow down whether this is simple dryness or something worth checking medically.
