Cheesy Hamburger Potato Casserole 🥔🧀🍔

A hearty, comforting casserole combining ground beef, potatoes, and melted cheese — perfect for family dinners.

🧂 Ingredients (Serves 4–6)

  • 1 lb (450 g) ground beef
  • 4–5 medium potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp paprika (optional)
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (or a mix of cheddar and mozzarella)
  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 tbsp butter or oil
  • 2 tbsp flour (for thickening)
  • ½ cup sour cream or cream cheese (optional, for creaminess)

🔥 Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. Cook the beef: In a skillet, sauté ground beef, onions, and garlic until beef is browned. Drain excess fat. Season with salt, pepper, and paprika.
  3. Prepare creamy sauce: In a small saucepan, melt butter, stir in flour to make a roux, gradually whisk in milk until thickened. Stir in sour cream if using.
  4. Assemble casserole:
    • Layer half of the sliced potatoes in the bottom of the baking dish.
    • Spread half of the cooked beef mixture over the potatoes.
    • Pour half of the creamy sauce on top.
    • Repeat layers with remaining potatoes, beef, and sauce.
  5. Top with cheese: Sprinkle shredded cheese evenly over the top.
  6. Bake: Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes. Remove foil and bake another 15–20 minutes until potatoes are tender and cheese is golden and bubbly.
  7. Rest: Let stand 5–10 minutes before serving.

🍴 Tips

  • For faster cooking, parboil potatoes for 5 minutes before layering.
  • Add vegetables like bell peppers, mushrooms, or peas for extra nutrition.
  • Use leftover mashed potatoes as a base for a simpler version.

If you want, I can also give a one-pan slow-cooker version that makes this casserole even easier and hands-off.
