hamburger steaks with onion gravy.

Posted on February 12, 2026 by Admin

Hamburger Steaks with Onion Gravy is a classic comfort food dish featuring seasoned ground beef patties cooked in a rich, savory onion-based gravy. It’s hearty, flavorful, and often served with mashed potatoes or rice.

What It Is

  • Hamburger steaks: Thick, seasoned ground beef patties (similar to Salisbury steak).
  • Onion gravy: Browned onions simmered with beef stock, flour, and seasonings to make a savory sauce.

Ingredients (4 servings)

For the Hamburger Steaks:

  • 1 lb (450 g) ground beef (80/20 for juiciness)
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs
  • ½ small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt & pepper to taste

For the Onion Gravy:

  • 2 tbsp butter or oil
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt & pepper to taste

Instructions

1. Make the Hamburger Steaks

  1. Mix ground beef, breadcrumbs, chopped onion, egg, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper in a bowl.
  2. Shape into 4 thick patties.

2. Cook the Patties

  1. Heat a skillet over medium heat and add a little oil.
  2. Brown the patties 3–4 minutes per side until fully cooked (internal temp ~160°F / 71°C).
  3. Remove patties and set aside.

3. Make the Onion Gravy

  1. In the same skillet, add butter and sliced onions. Cook until soft and caramelized (~5–7 minutes).
  2. Sprinkle flour over onions and stir to make a roux. Cook 1–2 minutes.
  3. Slowly whisk in beef broth and Worcestershire sauce.
  4. Simmer until gravy thickens, 3–5 minutes. Adjust seasoning.

4. Combine & Serve

  • Return hamburger steaks to the skillet, spoon gravy over them, and simmer 2–3 minutes to absorb flavor.
  • Serve hot with mashed potatoes, rice, or vegetables.

Tips for Best Results

  • Don’t overmix the beef—this keeps patties tender.
  • Caramelize onions well for a richer, sweeter gravy.
  • Optional: Add a splash of cream or Dijon mustard to the gravy for extra depth.

If you want, I can also make a shortcut one-pan version where you cook the patties and gravy together, perfect for weeknight dinners.

Do you want me to do that?
