Ingredients (Serves 4)

For the Hamburger Steaks

  • 1 lb (450g) ground beef (80% lean)
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt & black pepper to taste
  • 2 tbsp oil for frying

For the Onion Gravy

  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt & pepper to taste

Instructions

1️⃣ Prepare the Hamburger Steaks

  1. In a bowl, combine ground beef, chopped onion, breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper.
  2. Form into 4 equal-sized patties.

2️⃣ Cook the Patties

  • Heat oil in a skillet over medium heat.
  • Cook patties 4–5 minutes per side until browned and cooked through.
  • Remove patties and set aside.

3️⃣ Make the Onion Gravy

  1. In the same skillet, melt butter.
  2. Add sliced onions and sauté 5–7 minutes until soft and caramelized.
  3. Stir in flour and cook 1–2 minutes to form a roux.
  4. Slowly whisk in beef broth and Worcestershire sauce.
  5. Simmer 5–7 minutes until gravy thickens.
  6. Season with salt and pepper.

4️⃣ Combine & Serve

  • Return hamburger steaks to the skillet and coat with gravy.
  • Heat through 2–3 minutes.
  • Serve with mashed potatoes, rice, or vegetables.

  • For extra flavor, brown onions slowly for deeper sweetness.
  • You can add mushrooms to the gravy for a heartier dish.
