KFC chicken in the air fryer

Ohhh yeah—you can get KFC-style chicken vibes in the air fryer. Is it exactly the same? No. Is it crispy, juicy, and dangerously snackable? Absolutely. 🍗🔥

Air Fryer “KFC-Style” Chicken

Ingredients

Chicken

  • Bone-in chicken pieces (or boneless thighs)
  • Salt & black pepper

Marinade

  • 1½ cups buttermilk
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • ½ tsp paprika
  • ½ tsp garlic powder

Coating

  • 1½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • ½ tsp white pepper (very KFC-ish)
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • ½ tsp dried thyme
  • ½ tsp dried oregano
  • Pinch cayenne (optional)

1. Marinate

  • Mix marinade ingredients.
  • Submerge chicken.
  • Refrigerate at least 2 hours, overnight if possible.

2. Coat

  • Mix all coating ingredients.
  • Remove chicken from marinade, let excess drip.
  • Dredge heavily in flour mix, pressing it on.
  • Let coated chicken rest 10 minutes (important for crisping).

3. Air fry

  • Preheat air fryer to 380°F (193°C).
  • Spray basket and chicken generously with oil.
  • Cook 25–30 minutes, flipping halfway.
  • Spray again after flipping.

👉 Internal temp should hit 165°F (74°C).


4. Extra crisp trick

For that fried-like crunch:

  • Finish at 400°F for 3–5 minutes.

Tips to nail the KFC vibe

  • White pepper is key (don’t skip it)
  • Use bone-in for juicier results
  • Don’t overcrowd the basket
  • Oil spray = crunch insurance

Serve it right

  • Mashed potatoes + gravy
  • Coleslaw
  • Biscuits
  • Honey or hot sauce on the side
