method for controlling household ants.

Posted on February 13, 2026 by Admin

Here’s a practical, step-by-step method to control household ants effectively:

🐜 Step 1: Identify & Track

  • Watch where ants are coming from (cracks, windows, under doors).
  • Follow the trail to locate the entry point.

🧼 Step 2: Remove the Scent Trail

Ants follow invisible pheromone trails.

  • Wipe surfaces with equal parts vinegar and water
    OR
  • Use warm soapy water.
  • Dry thoroughly.

This disrupts their navigation system.

🍯 Step 3: Use Bait (Most Effective Long-Term Fix)

Spraying kills workers but doesn’t solve the colony problem. Bait works better because ants carry it back to the nest.

Homemade Sugar Bait

  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tbsp warm water
  • ½ tsp borax (NOT boric acid powder piles — mix well)

Soak into cotton balls and place near trails (away from pets/kids).

⚠️ Takes 3–7 days to see major reduction.

🧂 Step 4: Natural Repellents (For Light Problems)

  • Cinnamon along entry points
  • Diatomaceous earth (food-grade) in cracks
  • Peppermint oil + water spray (15 drops per cup)

These repel but don’t eliminate colonies.

🔧 Step 5: Seal Entry Points

  • Caulk cracks
  • Fix weather stripping
  • Repair window screens

🧹 Step 6: Prevention

  • Store food in airtight containers
  • Take trash out regularly
  • Clean spills immediately
  • Keep pet food sealed overnight

🚨 When to Call a Professional

  • Large recurring infestations
  • Carpenter ants (they damage wood)
  • Ants coming from walls consistently

If you tell me where you’re seeing them (kitchen, bathroom, outside walls), I can tailor the solution more specifically.
