Here’s a fresh, tangy, and zesty recipe for Mexican Shrimp Cocktail (Cóctel de Camarón) — a classic appetizer or light meal.

🍤 Mexican Shrimp Cocktail

Ingredients (4 servings)

  • 1 lb cooked shrimp, peeled and deveined (small to medium size)
  • 1 cup tomato juice (or clamato juice for extra flavor)
  • ½ cup ketchup
  • ¼ cup lime juice (freshly squeezed)
  • ½ cup finely chopped onion
  • ½ cup chopped cucumber (optional)
  • ½ cup diced avocado (optional)
  • ¼ cup chopped fresh cilantro
  • 1–2 jalapeños, finely chopped (optional, adjust to taste)
  • 1 tsp hot sauce (optional)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Tortilla chips or saltine crackers, for serving

Instructions

1️⃣ Prepare the shrimp

  • If using raw shrimp, boil in salted water with a squeeze of lime for 2–3 minutes until pink.
  • Drain and chill before mixing.

2️⃣ Make the cocktail sauce

  • In a large bowl, combine tomato juice, ketchup, lime juice, cilantro, jalapeño, hot sauce, salt, and pepper.
  • Mix well to taste — adjust lime or hot sauce if desired.

3️⃣ Combine ingredients

  • Add shrimp, onion, cucumber, and avocado to the sauce.
  • Stir gently to coat everything evenly.
  • Chill for 15–30 minutes to allow flavors to meld.

4️⃣ Serve

  • Spoon into glasses, bowls, or small cups.
  • Garnish with extra cilantro, avocado slices, or lime wedges.
  • Serve with tortilla chips or saltine crackers on the side.

🔹 Tips & Variations

  • Spicier version: add more jalapeño, hot sauce, or a dash of chili powder.
  • Seafood mix: combine shrimp with cooked octopus or crab for a mixed cocktail.
  • Presentation: serve in cocktail glasses for parties — very festive!
  • Make ahead: mix ingredients (except avocado) a few hours before serving; add avocado just before serving to prevent browning.
