Water chestnut

Posted on February 12, 2026 by Admin

Water chestnuts are crunchy, mildly sweet vegetables often used in stir-fries and Asian dishes.

What They Are

  • Not actually nuts — they’re aquatic vegetables.
  • Crisp texture, slightly sweet, stay crunchy even after cooking.

How to Use Water Chestnuts

🥡 In Stir-Fries

Slice and add during the last 2–3 minutes of cooking so they stay crisp.

🥬 In Lettuce Wraps

Chop finely and mix with ground chicken, turkey, or tofu for texture.

🍲 In Soups

Add near the end for crunch.

🥗 In Salads

Use sliced canned water chestnuts for a fresh crunch.

Quick Garlic Water Chestnuts (Simple Side)

Ingredients

  • 1 can sliced water chestnuts, drained
  • 1 tbsp oil
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp soy sauce
  • Pinch of pepper

Directions

  1. Heat oil in skillet.
  2. Add garlic; cook 30 seconds.
  3. Add water chestnuts; sauté 2–3 minutes.
  4. Stir in soy sauce and pepper. Serve warm.

Fresh vs. Canned

  • Canned: Most common, convenient, already peeled.
  • Fresh: Harder to find, sweeter flavor, need peeling.

If you’re planning to use them with the sautéed green beans and potatoes you mentioned, I can suggest a version that blends them all together nicely.
